Written by Don Ratzlaff Saturday, 08 December 2007 14:17The Hillsboro High School basketball teams played some pretty hot basketball on a day when it was cold and slippery outside. The Trojan girls and boys won their respective games by comfortable margins in the final round of the Cardinal Classic at Cheney on Saturday (Dec. 7) .
The Trojan girls raced to an 18-3 lead after one quarter and went on to derail the Chaparral Roadrunners by a score of 46-28 in the battle for fifth place in the six-team tournament.
Chaparral cut the margin to 23-11 at intermission, but the Trojans threw a shutout in the third quarter to extend the lead to 37-11 with Dakota Kaufman contributing six points, Amanda Faber four and Kassidi Luthi and Amy Neufeld a bucket each.
Coach Nathan Hiebert, claiming his first win as a high school varsity coach, cleared his bench early in fourth quarter with the score 42-14.
Kaufman led a balanced attack with 14 points, Faber added 13 and Luthi 12 as the Trojans improved to 1-2.
The Hillsboro boys, meanwhile, came out on fire in their game for third place against Winfield and eventually posted an impressive 76-54 victory.
Hillsboro led 22-13 after one quarter on 9-for-11 shooting from the floor. A salty Winfield squad took advantage of a stretch of Trojan sloppiness in the second quarter to climb back into contention by halftime, 35-34.
But the Trojans came out determined in the third quarter and extended the lead to 47-40 before exploding for a 29-14 advantage in the final period.
Clay Shewey, with six 3-point bombs, paced the potent Trojan attack with 26 points. David Loewen added 19 with a monster game in the middle, Gavin Serene pitched in 15 and Daniel Jost 14 as the Trojans improved to 2-1 for the young season.
