The Hillsboro City Council settled on a solution during its April 17 meeting for locating the local farmers’ market this season.
At least for the start of the season, the market will be located in the Emprise Bank courtyard along Main Street.
Mayor Delores Dalke introduced the compromise solution after Mary Regier, chair of the museum advisory board, surfaced the topic again during the “public comments” portion of the meeting.
Regier said that if the city was going to allow the market on what will be a freshly sodded lawn at the Schaeffler House, the board was hoping it would not be required to have someone present each week to open the house to tours or restroom use because it no longer has paid staff available to do so.
Dalke then announced that Emprise Bank was “excited” to have the market be on the courtyard immediately north of the bank.
The area is equipped with multiple electrical outlets for vendors and several tables with umbrellas for patrons.
The city hall would be open for restroom use.
Dalke said she had tested the idea with Joni Calam, one of the market organizers, who “seemed to be OK”?with the alternate location. Patrons could be easily directed to the downtown location if they come to the Schaeffler House, as advertized.
“We’ll see how it goes,” Dalke said. “I think it could be fun.”
City Administrator Larry Paine said the city’s plan is to sod the new lawn at the Schaeffler House during the second week of May.
In other business, the council:
• elected Byron McCarty as its president for the coming year. The council presidents leads the meetings in the absence of the mayor.
• re-elected council member Bob Watson as chair of the city’s Public Building Commission. The PBC is the entity that owns and oversees the facility that houses the local hospital and Salem Home.
• approved a conditional-use permit for Pat Nuss to use her residence at 702 W. B St. as a bed and breakfast. The permit was recommended by the Hillsboro Zoning Board following a public meeting with surrounding residents.
The permit limits occupancy to eight bed-and-breakfast patrons at any one time, requires provision for four off-street parking spots and limits the application of the permit to the current owner of the property.
