To celebrate his quarter-century of cutting hair in HIllsboro, Randy Wiens is planning an open house at Silver Shears during his Friday and Saturday hours. He is offering refreshments, gifts, door prizes and a drawing for $25 in haircuts.

City approves revised plan for Emprise drive-through

Emprise Bank received approval last Tuesday from the Hillsboro City Council to proceed with a revised plan for constructing a new drive-through lane at its Main and Grand location.

In late November, the council denied an initial proposal from the bank, even though the plan had been recommended for approval by the city’s Planning Commission.

 At the time, the council cited the loss of seven parking spaces on Main Street, and that some of those lost spaces would unfairly affect a neighboring business, Prudent Tours.

State Farm to issue auto dividend payout

Kansas policyholders of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insur­ance Co. will receive 15.1 percent of their semi-annual premium back this year, thanks to a record dividend payout by the company.

Insurance policy holders in the state will receive dividends totaling $19.8 million as Kansas’s share of a $1.25 billion policyholder dividend declaration.

The average dividend per vehicle in Kansas is $41, according to the company. Dividend payments were to begin in early April and will continue throughout the year. Most customers will receive their dividend by check.

In Marion County, State Farm insures more than 3,308 vehicles, said Becky Walsh, Hills­boro agent.

HCMC commits to going tobacco-free beginning May 7

Hillsboro Community Medi­cal Center is going tobacco-free May 7, hospital officials announced last week.

As of that date, no tobacco use of any kind will be permitted—inside or outside—HCMC property. This initiative will include the elimination of designated areas outside HCMC where employees, patients and visitors currently use tobacco products.

Mike Ryan, chief executive officer, said HCMC has joined hospitals and nursing homes across Kansas in an effort to become tobacco-free.

“As a health-care organization, we are committed to the health and safety of our employees and patients,” he said.
