Marion country club developers ask for city assistance

Attorney Chris Costello, representing Country Club Heights developers Doug Sharp and Roger Hannaford III at the Marion City Council meeting Monday, asked that the city assume more than $17,000 expected expense in paving the development’s access street called Country Club Heights.

Peabody Main Street wins three Governor's awards

The Peabody Main Street Association (PMSA) received three Governor’s Awards for Excellence Oct. 11 in Hutchinson.

Secretary of Commerce David Kerr presented the awards.

PMSA received an award for promotion/special event for the 2006 Christmas event, Peabody Prairie Christmas presents Western Wonderland; an outstanding fundraising award for the March 2007 Peabody Main Street Association to Die for Dessert Auction; and a Volunteer of the Year award to Susan Marshall, PMSA organization chair.

Members of the Hillsboro Cham­ber of Commerce gathered Friday afternoon for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting marking the opening of Accounting & Financial Initiative LLC by Bryce Wichert, a certified public accountant. The office is located on the 100 block of East First Street. Representatives from the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce and the newly opened Hillsboro Dental Care celebrated a ribbon-cutting Sunday afternoon marking the official opening of the clinic at the corner of Grand Avenue and Washington Street in Hillsboro. A bit more than four months ago, on May 25, a new Mexican restaurant, Casa Azteca, opened in Tampa under the ownership of Hector Cardenas of Marion.

Cardenas, a long-time chef originally from Mexico, said owning a restaurant is a dream of his, and Tampa opened the door.

“I tried to open (a restaurant) in Marion, but I don’t have the opportunity,” he said. “I guess (Tampa) just heard about me that I know how to cook a little bit and one time I was at the gas station and this gentleman came to me and say, ‘Hector, there’s some people in Tampa that want to talk to you.
