Haying, grazing CRP must meet regulations

Regulations under the Con­ser­vation Reserve Program permit managed haying or livestock grazing of established CRP field acres.

The following conditions must be met and understood to perform these operations:

A request must be filed at the local county Farm Service Agency office indicating acreage to be hayed or grazed before the activity begins.

Report includes two Angus bulls from Harms Ranch

Harms Plainview Ranch, Lincolnville, owns two bulls listed in the 2007 Fall Sire Evaluation Report published by the American Angus Associa­tion in Saint Joseph, Mo.

Issued in both the spring and fall, the new report features the latest performance information available on 6,679 sires, and is currently accessible at www.angussiresearch.com.

“This report provides both Angus breeders and commercial cattle producers using Angus genetics with accurate, predictable selection tools for improving their herd,” said Bill Bowman, American Angus Association director of performance programs.

Steve Goertzen of Goertzen Farms, Marilyn Unruh, Mike Berger and Steve Glahn (from left) assisted with the purchase and processing of the hog that the 4-H Development Council gave away at a fund-raising drawing during the Marion County Fair last week. The winners of a half hog were Ag Service Inc., Hillsboro, and David Funk, Hillsboro. The hog was donated by Goertzen Farms and Citizens State Bank and processing was donated by Peabody Sausage House, Peabody.

   

Goossen a finalist at National show

 Ty Goossen of Hillsboro and Megan Fink of Randolph placed well in the showmanship competition at the 41st National Junior Angus Show July 1-7 in Tulsa, Okla. The two, chosen to represent Kansas in the national showmanship contest after finishing first and second, respectively, at state, competed against 52 other state representatives and made it to the final 15 at the conclusion of four preliminary rounds. Randolph went on to place second overall. Exhibitors do not show their own animals, but are assigned one by random selection. They are judged by a three-member panel on skills such as the ability to follow instructions, use of equipment, courtesy, sportsmanship and general appearance. Goossen...

Farmers should be aware of upcoming FSA deadlines

The Farm Service Agency has many programs that provide Kansas farmers and ranchers supplemental income to help with the many expenses of a farming or ranching operation.

FSA wishes to remind producers that some important program deadlines are fast approaching.

Those deadlines are:

n Aug. 1—Final date to submit nominations for the FSA County Committee election. Any Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) acreages must be certified by Aug. 1, or 15 days prior to the onset of harvest or grazing. Final date to request a 2007 year farm change or reconstitution.

August 3 - Final date to signup for Direct and Counter-Cyclical Program (DCP), without paying a late fee.
