The 2012 Marion County Crop Walk will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at Marion County Lake with a brief devotional prior to the start.
Participants should be in the area west of the lake office. The purpose of the event is to “have a nice scenic walk around the lake and doing what is necessary to help those in need,” according to Donna Kreutziger of Marion, one of the coordinators.
Crop Walks help to support the ministry of Church World Service, especially the grassroots, hunger-fighting development efforts of partner agencies in more than 80 countries.
The money raised provides tools that empower people to meet their own needs—from seeds and tools, to wells and water systems, to nutrition-enhancing Moringa trees, to technical training and micro-enterprise loans.
Contributors may designate their own denominational relief agency to receive their contributions. In addition, each Crop Walk can return up to 25 percent of the funds it raises to local hunger-fighting programs.
“This unique option of returning 25 percent of the raised funds will come back to help serve the families that need aid from the Marion County Emergency Food Bank,” Kreutziger said.
