Days of a Bossy in every farm barnyard are long gone.Milking cows was part of being a farmer a century ago, and as recent as a half century later, still most farming operations had a few cows to milk.
Dairies specializing in milk production as the main agriculture enterprise expanded with most counties having several dozen dairy farmers.

Students awarded scholarships and honors at state FFA

Several area students were awarded honors and scholarships during the 85th Kansas FFA Convention May 29-31 in Manhattan.State FFA Degrees
Thirteen area FFA members were among the 36 from the South Central District to be awarded their State FFA Degree May 31.
The State Degree is the highest honor the Kansas FFA Association can bestow upon its members.
Three area schools were represented. Receiving the degree from the Centre chapter were Justin Deines, Kyle Methvin, Chad Mueller, Tom Oborny, Tanner Peterson, Karl Riffel and Ty Simmons;
Members from the Hillsboro chapter were Lauren Geis, Bryce Roberts and Nathan Unruh.
Recipients from the Marion-Florence chapter were Jacob Cope, Aaron Molleker and Montana Percell.

Wheat groups pledge funds

The Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Wheat Alliance and Kansas Crop Improvement Association announced last week that collectively, they will fund more than $1.4 million dollars in wheat research for the 2014 fiscal year.The research awards are for scientists with Kansas State University in Manhattan and Hays. The 2014 fiscal year runs from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.
Research funding comes from one-and-a-half cents collected on every bushel of wheat sold in the state through the Kansas Wheat Commission, royalties collected on licensed public varieties through the Kansas Wheat Alliance and contributions from the research support fund generated by certified seed growers.

Pheasants Forever to host workshop for landowners

Pheasants Forever will be hosting a workshop Thursday, May 8, for landowners who would like to learn more about the upcoming Conservation Reserve Program signup.The meeting will be at 1 p.m. in the basement of Marion City Hall. Pheasants Forever will serve refreshments.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency will have its CRP general signup from May 20 through June 14. CRP is a voluntary program that helps agricultural producers use environmentally sensitive land for conservation benefits.
Producers enrolled in CRP plant long-term, resource-conserving ground cover to control soil erosion, improve water and air quality and develop wildlife habitat.

Marion/Florence FFA receives donation

Jacob Cope, president of the Marion/Florence FFA chapter, accepts a donation of $1,107 from Jim Fink, owner of Clark Farm & Home in Strong City. The business joined forces with Red Brand for the donation through the Red Brand Home Grown program. This is the second year Clark Farm & Home has donated to the Marion/Florence FFA. In all, more than 700 FFA chapters nationwide receive annual funding from the Home Grown program.
