Unruh awarded Ford’s FFA scholarship

Hillsboro High School senior Nathan Unruh holds the citation naming him recipient of the $1,000 Built Ford Tough-FFA Scholarship through Hillsboro Ford and the Ford Motor Co. Flanking him are Terry Hagen (left) and Randy Hagen, co-owners of Hillsboro Ford. Unruh, son of Warren and Anita Unruh, plans to attend Kansas State University this fall to pursue a degree in agricultural business management. He is working toward a career in farming or ranching.

 

 

Marion council updated on park plan

The Marion City Council at its meeting May 13 was alerted to alleged misinformation regarding the park board’s two proposed restroom sites.

Todd Heitschmidt, park board member and city councilor, spoke about the issue during public forum.

“Two weeks ago (the board) made a presentation and it has appreciated the public input thus far,” he said.

The two possible locations would be on the east side of the park near the swingsets and along the driveway or on the west side to the south of the fountain.

Heitschmidt said he was also disappointed about the misleading information provided by a local media outlet, which included whether the park board or city council had the final say on the plans.

Wheat tour confirms a varying wheat crop in state

Looking at wheat throughout the central region of Kansas during the first couple days of May, members of the Wheat Quality Council labeled the crop in fairly average to slightly above-average condition.

Go a bit further west to Graham County and the wheat crop took a turn for the worse, according to Mark Nelson, Kansas Farm Bureau commodities director who’s taken part in the WQC for several years.

“We really saw some tough wheat the further west we traveled,” Nelson says. “A lot of this wheat didn’t come up until after the first of the year and when this happens you can count on about a 50 percent drop in yield potential.”

Roberts: This week could be a critical one for corn

This could be a critical week for getting the 2013 Marion County corn crop into the ground.

The questions about whether it’s getting late to plant corn, and whether ground is going to be dry enough to plant in time are “some tough calls to make,” according to Rickey Roberts, Marion County extension agent.

Of major concern, he said, is whether wheat straw stubble left from last year’s crop for no-till planting of corn will dry sufficiently, given the additional time needed because of the dense covering compared to conventional tillage. Rather than an advantage for moisture conservation, the situation may have turned into a short-term disadvantage.
