Sub-state volleyball seedings released for Free Press area high schools


The Kansas State High School Activities Association has released the seedings for Saturday’s high school sub-state volleyball tournaments. Following are the assignments for the six schools in the Free Press distribution area.

Hillsboro and Marion have been assigned to the Class 3A tournament hosted by Halstead. Hillsboro (34-3) enters as the No. 2 seed and will play Marion (14-22), the No. 7 seed, at 2 p.m. The other schools in the tournament are Sedgwick (No. 1, 35-1), Hutchinson Trinity (No. 3, 27-8), Remington (No. 4, 22-13), Halstead (No. 5, 23-14), Haven (No. 6, 16-17) and Lyons (No. 8, 6-25). Hillsboro, currently ranked No. 1 in all of 3A, lost the No. 1 seed in the sub-state tournament following a 28-26, 25-21 defeat at the hands of Sedgwick last night.

In Class 2A, Peabody-Burns will have the No. 2 seed at Howard (West Elk High School). The Warriors will face Central (No. 7, 6-23) of Burden in the third match of the afternoon. The tournament, using a one-court option, begins at 1 p.m. The other schools are Madison/Hamilton (No. 1, 17-12), Berean Academy (No. 3, 15-17), Sedan (No. 4, 13-21), West Elk (No. 5, 10-20), Chase County (No. 6, 10-22) and Oxford (No. 8, 5-26).

Also in 2A, Canton-Galva (5-26) has been assigned the No. 8 seed at Lincoln and will face No. 1 Ell-Saline (30-5) at 1 p.m. The other schools in the tournament are Central Plains (No. 2, 22-13), Herington (No. 3, 20-14), Bennington (No. 4, 17-15), Republic County (No. 5, 13-19), Lincoln (No. 6, 11-24) and Solomon (No. 7, 7-23).

In Class 1A Division I, Goessel and Centre have been assigned to the sub-state at Rosalia (Flinthills High School). Goessel (27-9), seeded No. 2, has a bye in the first round and will take on the winner of No. 3 Flinthills (22-11) and No. 6 Burrton (1-28) in the semifinals, which would be the fourth match of the tournament that begins at 1 p.m. Centre (19-12), seeded No. 4, will play Hartford (No. 5, 1-26) in the second first-round match of the tournament. The only other school in the tournament is Olpe (No. 1, 26-4), who received a first-round bye and will face the winner of Centre vs. Hartford in the other semifinals, which will be the third match of the afternoon.
