Marion sweeps Remington on the road

Girls?Marion avenged an earlier loss by defeating Remington, 45-33, Tuesday, handing the Broncos their first league loss.

Remington played without the injured Kelcey Hinz, who had scored 11 points in the Broncos? 44-35 victory over the Warriors in the Marion Classic last December.

Both teams struggled from the field early on. The Warriors missed their first eight attempts from the field, and Kirsten Hansen scored Marion?s first two points at the charity stripe. After Remington made the game?s first basket at the 6:08 mark, the score remained tied at 2 for more than three minutes. McKenzee Remmers scored Marion?s first basket at the 2:54 mark, and the teams traded scores the rest of the way for a 9-8 Marion lead at the first break.

After the Broncos made their first and only basket of the second quarter 42 seconds in, the Warriors made the first four field goals they attempted to lead, 17-10. Erika Hess capped the 8-0 run with a basket at the 5:37 mark. By the time Kirsten Hansen drained a three-pointer with 3:21 to go, Marion led, 22-12. That margin held to halftime, as each team committed three turnovers after that.

Marion continued to build its lead in the third quarter. Kourtney Hansen and Bailey Robson each scored off turnovers early on, and Marion closed the period with a 6-2 run to lead, 34-20.

With the Warriors leading, 38-23, Remington took advantage of six Marion turnovers by scoring six unanswered points. Hess broke the scoring drought by grabbing a steal and scoring with 1:49 to play, and Marion went on to win by 12.

Boys?A solid first half of offense carried the Marion boys to a 62-57 victory over Remington Tuesday.

Marion shot around 56 percent from the field in the first two quarters (15-27), and benefitted from a big second quarter in which the Warriors outscored Remington, 22-6.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle. Nicholas Stuchlik and Jack Schneider each contributed five points in the period, which ended with Marion clinging to a 16-15 lead.

Marion outscored Remington 18-2 over the first 6:28 of the second quarter. The Warriors made the first four shots they attempted, and scored 10 unanswered points before the Broncos made a basket at the 3:19 mark. Zachary Stuchlik and Mason Pedersen sandwiched a Nicholas Stuchlik basket with a pair of three-pointers, giving Marion a 34-17 margin with 1:32 left in the period.

Remington made just three of its 12 attempts in the second quarter, two of which came in the final 1:09. Marion led, 38-21, at halftime.

The Broncos went on an 8-0 run after intermission to trim the margin to single digits before Nicholas Stuchlik scored on a traditional three-point play. The teams traded scores the rest of the way, giving Marion a 50-39 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Nicholas Stuchlik made Marion?s only basket of the fourth quarter 14 seconds in, then Remington went on another 8-0 run to cut Marion?s lead to five. Although the Broncos trimmed the margin to three a few times, Marion held on to win by making 10 of 16 free throws attempted in the final 3:48.

Schneider led the Warriors with 16 points. Nicholas Stuchlik and Pedersen each added 13.
