The Marion boys’ basketball team (2-0) brought a dominating performance to their home court in the first round of the Marion Classic Tuesday, handily defeating Peabody-Burn, 80-42. The win came after the Marion girls’ team (0-2) came up short to Peabody-Burns, 31-25.
Boys - Marion broke out of the gate fast, outscoring Peabody-Burns, 21-8, in the first period and sinking three perimeter shots. Peabody-Burns rallied for five points to start the second quarter, but seniors Jacob Harper and Jordan Hett combined for an 11-point run to make it 32-13 with 4:21 left. Marion took care of business from there, leading 41-21, at the break.
Marion came out just as strong in the third quarter, building a 60-33 lead, and turned things over to the bench midway through the final period. The reserves scored 14 more points in the final four minutes for the 80-42 final.
Harper and Hett posted 19 points each to lead Marion. Austin Pederson added 13 points and Taylor Heidebrecht 10.
Girls - Both teams start sluggishly, but Marion held a slim 4-3 lead over Peabody-Burns at the end of the first period. Play heated up in the second quarter, as Peabody-Burns grabbed the lead with just under four minutes left. Marion rallied to scored 10 points by the end of the period to claim a 14-11 advantage at the break.
Marion outscored Peabody-Burns in the third period, 7-2, to take a 21-13 lead. But Peabody-Burns sank three baskets from beyond the arc to outscore Marion 18-4 and claim the win.
Katey Ehrlich led Marion with eight points, followed by Kaelyn Thierolf and Erin Meierhoff with six each.
