GIRLS - Keying on a defense that forced 28 turnovers through three quarters and 35 for the game, the Trojans were never threatened by the Vikings, who are now 1-5 for the year. Hillsboro led 19-5 after one quarter and 36-10 by halftime. With a 60-22 lead after three quarter, the final period was played with a running clock and with Trojan substitutes on the court.
Addie Lackey led the team with a season-high 20 points. Maci Schlehuber and Danae Bina each added 13 as the Trojans shot nearly 56 percent from the floor. Smoky Valley shot just under 55 percent, but put up 30 fewer shots than Hillsboro did, thanks to the Trojans’ stifling defense.
BOYS - After yet another half where the Trojans had trouble shooting the basketball, the Hillsboro managed got two key surges in the second half to win their second straight game. The score was tied at 6 after one quarter, but Hillsboro managed a two-point lead by halftime at a meager 20-18.
Midway through the third quarter, Evan Ollenburger picked a Viking player’s pocket and scored on a layup, launching a surge of three straight fast-break baskets that energized the crowd and the team. With a pair of free throws on either end of that explosion, Hillsboro’s 10-0 run put them in the driver’s seat for good. By the end of the third quarter, Hillsboro led 30-23. Ollenburger started the final quarter with a three-point basket that ignited an 8-0 scoring run and put the Trojans in command on the way to their 12-point win.
Harry Faber stepped up for his best game of the season, scoring 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting including 2-for-2 from behind the arc. Shaq Thiessen added 13 points and Brett Weinbrenner 12, including 8-for- free-throw shooting.
Hillsboro will wrap up its pre-holiday schedule Friday with games at Marion.
