HMS girls struggle in tough week vs. Lindsborg, Lyons

The Hillsboro Middle School girls’ basketball team had a busy—and tough—week, with a full-slate of games The Hillsboro Middle School girls’ basketball team had a busy—and tough—week, with a full-slate of games scheduled for last Thursday and then again on Monday. The seventh-grade team also had a weekend tournament. On Monday, all three HMS teams lost on the road to Lyons. In the eighth-grade game, Hillsboro trailed 30-14 at halftime and went on to lose 51-23. Katie Fast led Hillsboro with eight points, followed by Danielle Goossen with seven, Steph King six and Trichia Pauls two. The seventh-grade team lost 22-16 after leading 14-12 after three quarters. Charity Davis led Hillsboro with seven points, followed by Emily Ratzlaff with six, Niki Streeter two and Amy Duerksen one. The mixed team lost 31-12. Streeter scored six for the mixed team. Jess Vannocker added four and Whitney Washmon added two. Earlier in the week, both the seventh- and eighth-grade teams lost home games to Lindsborg. The eighth-graders lost 33-14, scoring no more than four points in any quarter. Fast led Hillsboro with five points. Goossen had four, Pauls three and Mindy Munguya two for the Trojans. In the seventh-grade contest, Lindsborg won 38-21, outscoring Hillsboro 18-2 in the final quarter. Emily Ratzlaff scored six to lead Hillsboro, with Sara Hamm adding five, Charity Davis four and Erin Wiebe, Sara Prieb and Heather Stepanek two each. The seventh-grade team split a pair of games in a three-team tournament at Hesston on Saturday. In the opening game, Hillsboro took revenge on the host Swathers, a team that had beaten them earlier in the season, 34-22. Hillsboro led 17-9 at halftime and went on to win easily behind some solid individual performances. Davis had the hot hand for the Trojans, with 15 points. Ratzlaff added 10 points, while Duerksen scored seven and Wiebe chipped in two free throws. The Trojans also took on Lindsborg in a rematch from Thursday’s game. This game was competitive throughout, but Hillsboro fell short, 27-23. Davis again led Hillsboro with 11 points, while Duerksen scored six, Ratzlaff four and Wiebe two to round out the scoring.
