Trojans suffer through a snowy, sad Saturday in tournament play

The HHS girls lost in the championbship game of the girls bracket, while the boys placed sixth following a loss in the fifth-place game. The Hillsboro High School girls jumped to a 15-6 lead after one quarter in the championship game of the Trojan Classic on Saturday, but it was Riley County who was on top at the final buzzer, 57-54.

Even by halftime, the Falcons had pulled into the lead, outscoring the Trojans 22-7 to take a 28-22 margin into halftime.

The two teams played even in the third quarter, to keep the margin at six points, 40-34. Hillsboro made a late challenge, but the Falcons made 11 of 16 free throws in the last 2:15 to preserve the win.

Tina Frick scored 14 and JuliAnne Chisholm 12 to lead HHS. With the loss, Hillsboro drops to 8-2.

In the boys' game, Hillsboro and Sunrise Academy played a close game almost the entire way before the Buffaloes spread the margin to seven points at the end, 66-59 , in the fifth-place game.

Lucas Hamm scored 21 and Spencer Brown 11 in the loss. Bret Michael lad Sunrise with 38 points.

Hillsboro now stands at 4-6.
